The Northwest Ordinance was passed by the Articles of Confederation. It set a pattern for orderly growth in the Northwest Territory.

6 Louisiana Purchase 1803 President Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon, the leader of France for $15 million. It doubled the size of the US.

15 Oregon 1846 The US and Britain jointly occupied the Oregon Territory. They agreed to split the territory between them.

17 Mexican Cession 1848 After the Mexican War, Mexico ceded land to the US. These states were California CA, Nevada NV, Utah UT, Arizona AZ, New Mexico NM, Colorado CO, and Wyoming WY.

19 Gadsden Purchase 1853 The government of US asked Mexico to purchase this land to build a railroad. Mexico sold the land to the US for $10 million

20 Cede/Cession- to surrender by treaty or agreement Annex/Annexation- the act of adding or joining a territory to an existing one Manifest Destiny- the belief that the US was destined to stretch across the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean
