1 FINISHES (FLOOR, WALL & CEILING)
Prepared By: Dr. Syamsul Hendra Bin Mahmud Faculty of Built Environment

2 FLOOR FINISHES The type of floor finishes that will be used are depending on several factors: Type of base Room/Space usage Degree of comfort required Maintenance problems Cost Appearance Safety Individual preferences

3 FLOOR FINISHES Floor finishes can be classified under three headings:
In-situ floor finishes Mixed on site, laid in a fluid state, allowed to dry, and set to form a hard jointless surface Applied floor finishes Supplied in tile or sheet form and are laid onto a suitably prepared based Timber floor finishes Boards, sheets and blocks or timber laid on or attached to a suitable structural frame or base

4 FLOOR FINISHES Classification of floor finishes:
In-situ floor finishes Cement screed Terrazo Floor paint Applied floor finishes Ceramic Homogeneous (Homogeneous tile) Non Homogeneous (Mosaic, ceramic) Natural stones Marble Granite Quartz Slates

21 WALL FINISHES The type of wall finishes that will be used are depending on several factors: Type of base Room/Space usage Degree of comfort required Maintenance problems Cost Appearance Individual preferences

22 WALL FINISHES External brickwork with an exposed face of facing bricks is a self-finish and requires no further treatment. External walls of common bricks or blocks can be treated to give an acceptable appearance by the application of paint or an applied wall finish such as rendering, or can be clad with boards or tiles. Internal walls or partitions can be built with a fair face of natural materials such as bricks or stone but much cheaper by using plaster or glazed tiles.

23 WALL FINISHES Types of wall finishes: Wall paper Ceramic wall tiles
Cement screed Painting

25 Ceramic wall tiles

26 Screed and paint

27 CEILING FINISHES There are two types of ceiling: Fixed ceiling
Fixed directly to the upper floor or the roof structure. Can be either cement rendering or asbestos panel, plywood panel, cardboard, wood panel etc. Problems: to hide the building services. Plaster ceiling are commonly used in residential building. Using fiber glass Fixed to upper floor or roof structure Problems: installation of lights and fan

28 CEILING FINISHES Suspended ceiling
Frame and panel type Strip ceiling type The structure are hanging to the upper floor or roof structure. Important to minimize the load of the ceiling. Space between upper floor/roof structure should be enough to fit in the building services. Need to consider for maintenance. Ceiling panel should be a good fire resistance.
