3 Three Types of Rhetorical Appeals
Ethos Pathos Logos

4 Ethos Credibility A way of convincing an audience based on the good values of the writer/speaker Does the audience respect you? Does the audience believe you are of good character? Does the audience believe you are generally trustworthy? Does the audience believe you are an authority on this speech topic? Example: I am a husband, a father, and a taxpayer. I’ve served faithfully for 20 years on the school board. I deserve your vote for city council.

6 Pathos Emotions A way of convincing an audience based on appealing to their emotions Such an appeal attempts to persuade by stirring up the emotions of the audience and attempts to create any number of emotions, including: fear, sadness, contentment, joy, and pride. Example: ASPCA commercials- showing abused animals with sad music behind it appeals to your emotions in order to get monetary donations.

9 Logos Logic A way of convincing an audience based on the use of reasoning, facts, and statistics Example: A Chevrolet advertisement that provides performance data on the vehicle being marketed is making a logical appeal.

My Name is Ms. Dombrow and I’m going to tell you why Michigan State is the best choice if you want to become a teacher. My amazing MSU education allowed me to get a job right out of college as well as partake in educational research. (Ethos) MSU works with schools in Lansing to help students from underprivileged homes succeed in school. (Pathos) MSU has been ranked #1 for elementary and secondary education for 22 years in a row. (Logos) MSU is the best university for teachers because you will be competitive in the job market, help students in need, and be able to say you attend the #1 school in that field. If you want to be a teacher, apply to MSU TODAY!

You cannot truly fall in love with more than one person.  MUST: Introduce yourself and give your Opening Line THESIS [= Main Argument] Utilize all 3 rhetorical appeals to support your argument Make a Closing Statement summary calling your audience to action ALL UNDER 30 SECONDS (time yourself... You will lose points if your speech is shorter or longer than 30 seconds)
