1 Industry in SC 8-5.5

2 I. Industry across US Industry grew in most of the US after the Civil War. The transcontinental railroad led to: The growth of the steel and oil industries. The creation of meat packing and grain processing plants. Foreign immigrants flocked to the US for opportunity.

3 II. Industry in SC SC was unaffected by economic growth so few immigrants came. Redeemers looked down at industry & worked to return to SC to antebellum ways.

4 II. Industry in SC The railroad boom helped SC anyway.
Major cities grew b/c of train routes. Columbia became a southern hub handling over 100 trains a day. Time zones were created and time was standardized.

6 II. Industry in SC The textile industry began to boom in SC as well.
We had COTTON! We had many unemployed farmers. We had native people willing to invest in building factories. We had rivers for power and transporting the finished goods.

7 II. Industry in SC Mill villages started for the workers to live in.
They were much better than living on farms. Whites, not AAs were hired to work in the factories. They were started in the Upstate in SC.

8 III. Mill life When times were tough, workers were fired and kicked out of their houses. Children worked in factories b/c their little hands fit in the machines. Men were paid half as much as other mills in the US. Women & children made less than that. They worked 6 days a week, 12 hour days.

9 III. Mill life Diseases like tuberculosis were common.
Accidents were common. Anyone trying to start a union was fired. National unions were ineffective in helping workers in SC. SC politicians were more concerned with helping the owners than the workers.

10 IV. New Products Production of cottonseed oil, lumber, and phosphates increased. Northern factories were lured to SC by offering cheap, non-union labor. Phosphate rock was discovered and is used as a fertilizer. The 1893 hurricane and discovery of big deposits in Florida destroyed SC phosphate industry.
