Whilst browsing the web your anti-virus program flashes up the above window warning you that it has been disabled and that you need to click the box Protect PC Now. Do you: 1.Look at the Windows Task bar to see what status your anti-virus icon shows. 2.Click on the box Protect PC Now and download and install the recommended program. 3.Pause and think this is strange and contact another family member or friend for an opinion. 3 You meet up for a coffee with a friend who has just returned from a holiday in Thailand and Cambodia. She wants to show you her photos which are still on the camera she has with her. She remarks that she has not been able to upload them yet to Flickr. It is difficult to see the photos on the small camera screen so she suggest putting the cameras memory card into your Netbook memory card slot or connecting via USB lead. Do you: 1.Do you go ahead and put the memory card into your Netbook and view the photos? 2.Ask your friend why she has difficulty getting the photos off the camera? 3.Put the card into your Netbook and scan with your anti-virus? 4 You are talking with a friend in your favourite café. A point of contention has arisen and you are eager to prove your point by going onto the Internet with your smart phone. The café provides free Wi-Fi but your forgot to pick up an access code when you brought your coffee. There are now long queues at the counter. Your smart phone shows that there is a free BT Wi-Fi hotspot. Do you: 1.Connect to the BT hotspot although you know you do not have any BT accounts? 2.Connect using your 3G data connection although you know your phones credits are low? 3.Decide you would like another coffee anyway? Your friend who persuaded you to buy it insisted that whilst they are more expensive than a Windows laptop you will save money in the long term as you do not have to buy and install anti-virus software. The Apple Mac operating system is highly secure and there are no known Mac viruses. Do you: 1.Do you trust your friends advice and not install any anti-malware programs? 2.Search the web and install Mac Defender the name of which you recognise from Windows Defender? 3.Go into a Apple Mac store and ask for assistance at the Genius desk? 6 You answer the telephone and the caller gives their name and says they calling from BTs Indian call centre in Bangalore. You are told that BTs anti- malware scanners had detected a virus on your computer. In a re-assuring voice you are asked whether you would install a piece of anti-malware software from BTs malware website. He gives you the website address. Do you: 1.Think what a nice person he is and are impressed by BTs technology and go ahead and install the anti- malware program? 2.Say you cannot understand his Indian accent and ask to speak to person in England? 3.Think that BT does not give anything away for free and politely decline his offer. So you are delighted when you get a message from a friend on your Facebook whiteboard offering you to "Enable video calls." on your Facebook account. Do you: 1.Eagerly click the link on your whiteboard and accept the request for permissions? 2.Contact the friend who wrote on your whiteboard? 3.Do nothing as it a bit strange that this not normally the way you load features & apps on Facebook? 8 For sometime now your fairly new laptop has started running slower and slower; particularly when you are connected to the Internet at home. You have put the problem down to the Internet being slow and you do live on the edge of town where broadband speeds are slower. A friend comes round and their laptop works fine on your Internet connection. They also point out that your broadband router lights seem to be flashing a lot although neither of you are using the laptops. Do you: 1.Take the laptop back to the store and complain? 2.Signup for the paid anti-virus software as the free trial period has now elapsed? 3.Decide its time to call in next doors 18 year old technical wizard? 9 You have recently upgraded your Apple Mac computer to the new operating system OSX Lion. Whilst using Apples web browser Safari a site invites you to download and install Adobe Flash player 11. Do you: 1.Download and install as advised? 2.Recall that Apple no longer includes Flash Player as it uses it own new program and ignore the message? 3.Follow good practice and go to the Adobe Flash Player website and download and install from there? 10 You live in a busy conurbation and life is pretty hectic. You have a laptop which you use at work and home. You also have an older tower PC which the kids mainly use. You have broadband and a new wireless router so you can use your laptop around the home. When you use your laptop at home to browse the web or pick up emails you often find the browser takes you to strange websites. The other day you found the kids looking at inappropriate adult material. Both computers have up to date and paid for anti-virus software and content filtering on the kids PC. They are working properly as both computers are capturing and quarantining loads of malicious software. Do you: 1.Not do anything, its just the way the Internet is now? 2.Talk to the IT specialist at work and get him to look at your laptop? 3.Wonder why other local wireless networks you can see on your laptop show a locked padlock and yours doesn't?
