7 New York Originally established by the Dutch and known as New Amsterdam New Amsterdam became a thriving port. English took over and renamed New Amsterdam, New York in 1664.

9 Pennsylvania Founded by a Quaker, William Penn
Land given to him by King Charles to repay a debt Pennsylvania was established for Quakers to practices freely (Quakers are pacifists) W. Penn wanted fair treatment of Native Americans Farming thrived in Pennsylvania Penn wrote first colonial constitution and established a legislature

10 New Jersey Established on land that was previously part of New York
Named after the island of Jersey in the English channel Had no natural deep water harbors Not as successful as the New York colony Think Critically!! Why do you think New Jersey wasn’t as successful as New York?

11 Delaware Swedes settled in lower Pennsylvania
Charter of Privileges allowed them to stay there They were granted their own legislature which later became its own entity. Delaware operated under the governor of Pennsylvania
