3 Notes: Jim Crow 1865: 13th Amendment abolishes slavery
1868: 14th Amendment grants citizenship to former slaves 1870: 15th Amendment grants vote to freedmen. 1875: Civil Rights Act entitles ALL citizens to “full and equal enjoyment” of anything public and prohibits denying access or service based on race.

4 Notes: Jim Crow 1883: Supreme Court overturns Civil Rights Act as unconstitutional. 1892: Mississippi passes law requiring literacy test to vote, other Southern states follow. 1896: Plessy vs. Ferguson case creates legal precedent for segregation by defending separate facilities based on race.
