2 Ku Klux Klan Group founded in 1866 Used intimidation and violence to get what they wanted Wanted to limit the rights of African Americans and stop the push for equality Targeted voting rights first

10 EXAMPLES OF POLICIES LIMITING VOTING RIGHTS: GRANDFATHER CLAUSE: rule saying you could vote only if your grandfather could vote Why would this be a problem?

11 EXAMPLES OF POLICIES LIMITING VOTING RIGHTS: POLL TAX: payment to the government that had to be made before an individual could vote Why would this be an issue for African Americans?

12 EXAMPLES OF POLICIES LIMITING VOTING RIGHTS: LITERACY TESTS: rules that stated that voters needed to prove they were able to read and write before they voted Southerners argued that voting required intelligent decisions, so you needed to be educated to vote Tests were only given to African Americans Why do you think they did not give these tests to everyone?
