1 TOOLS FOR SUCCESS Mr. McKee

2 Course Description Students are introduced to keyboarding skills and techniques. Students learn how to use the basic features of Microsoft Office and how to effectively use the Internet to search for information. In addition, students explore online databases, online encyclopedias, and learn the process for identifying reputable sources. Students learn digital citizenship skills and also take part in an Internet safety course taught in collaboration with the school police liaison.

3 OBJECTIVE: This is a 10-week class with the purpose of introducing and reinforcing some basic computer skills in the context of 9 short assignments and ending in a final project that ties all the skills learned together. These skills include the use of:

4 1. PowerPoint Slide layout, text, graphics, transitions, and a project.

5 2. Keyboarding Type 2 Learn 4
Home row method, “asdf jkl;” Type to Learn 4 lessons to teach typing The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

6 3. Word Review fonts, pictures, paragraphs, tabs, centering

7 4. Excel Pie charts, column charts, summing, averaging

8 5. Inspiration : Boxing Help in organizing writing and “boxing” essays.

9 6. INTERNET Research using online databases, encyclopedias and other sources

10 7. SQ4R – for web research 1. Survey Preview the text by looking at and deciphering keywords, pictures, graphs, captions, titles, and headings. Read any questions that appear at the end of chapter. 2. Question Predict what a section might be about, explore the purpose of the reading, turn title/heading into a question, use 5 Ws (who, what, where, when, why) and H (how) 3. Read Actively and 4. Relate Actively read the text. Pay attention to information that will answer your questions. Close the book and answer the questions you developed. Write the answers in your own words. Check your answers and revise if needed. 5. Retell Summary 6. Reread To make sure it was all understood

Students investigate the disappearance of a teenager and using s, websites and other evidence try to find out what happened.

12 9. Photo Story Inserting, arranging and adding effect to pictures.
Adding narration. Creating a presentation.

13 10. Final Project ?????????????????????? Ties together everything you’ve learned into a presentation you will give to your classmates on the last days of class.

14 WHAT YOU NEED everyday:
Folder – keeps all of your assignments, stays in the class. Pencil or Pen – some writing is required in this class, even if it is a computer class! I prefer pens Paper (recommended) – to take notes. Planner – use as a pass

17 CONSEQUENCES to disobeying the code of conduct:
Reminder. Verbal Warning. Examples: “Be quiet!” “Stop that!”… Write up/ sent to STAT room. Warning, Written description of behavior returned signed by parent or guardian the next day. – can lead to detentions and referrals. Office Referral. Sent to office or stat room and parent contacted. – can lead to step system and suspension. If it is the technology code that you have abused, you may be removed from being allowed to use computers for a time or for the whole year.

18 In order to pass you need 8 of 10 assignments completed.
GRADES: At the end of the rotation the folder of all assignments is collected. Grades are based on the completion of all the assignments and a final grade is given as - SATISFACTORY or UNSATISFACTORY. In order to pass you need 8 of 10 assignments completed.
