2 I. The Monarchy is Abolished
Aug. 10: Crowd storms the Tuileries Palace to assassinate the king. Royals escape to Legislative Assembly. September Massacres: Citizens attacked prisons holding nobles and priests. 1,200 prisoners killed; most were just ordinary criminals.

3 I. The Monarchy is Abolished
Radicals take over Leg. Assembly; vote to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic. Jacobins take nobles’ land. January 1793: Louis XVI put on trial for treason against France. Executed next day. Oct. 1793: Marie Antoinette tried and executed.

6 II. Terror and Danger Committee of Public Safety created to protect France. Absolute power Made every citizen contribute to war. Led by Maximilien Robespierre: “The Incorruptible” “Liberty cannot be secured unless criminals lose their heads.”

7 Robespierre Against the ancién régime and slavery.
Use terror to achieve good.

8 Reign of Terror Guillotine and hasty public trials used to kill anyone suspected of being anti-revolution or “unpatriotic”. 300,000 arrested 17,000 killed July 1794: Robespierre himself was executed by guillotine.

9 III. Revolution enters its third stage
Set up 5-man Directory and 2-house legislature. Bourgeoisie-ruled. War with Austria and Britain continued. People turned to Napoleon Bonaparte- popular military hero.

10 IV. Revolution Brings Change
By 1799, no more estates or noble titles. Nationalism: a strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country. Spread through France.
