2  Radical Phase  One of the bloodiest regimes.  Leaders wanted to extend the Revolution.  The French were being destroyed by Prussians.  Parisians believed that the King was a traitor.  Parisians storm the palace and royal family flees(1792).  Citizens attack prisons and kill 1,200 prisoners.

3  Radicals Take Control  Radicals take control of the Assembly.  Suffrage is extended to all men.  Radicals wants to abolish monarchy.  Jacobins controls the convention of abolishing the monarchy.  King Louis XVI on trial for being a “traitor”.  King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette executed(1793).

7   Middle Class leading force  Mostly professional people, doctors, merchants, etc.  Moved away from the Terror  Developed a new constitution  5 man Directory, and 2 house legislative  Directory was weak and faced discontent  1795-1799 The Revolution Enters Its Third Stage

9   Peace with Prussia and Spain  Wars with Austria  Corrupt leaders  Money for own benefit  Neglected problems  Rising bread prices caused riots  Rising of royal support threatened Directory The Revolution Enters Its Third Stage Cont.

15   Revolution gave “citizens” a strong national Identity  A variety of songs and dances about Revolution emerge  In Marseilles, people were marching to “La Marseilles”  La Marseilles later became the national anthem Nationalism spreads
