1 Big Idea 9: Changes in Matter
Grade K Changing Matter Physically (SC.K.P.9.1) Division of Academics - Department of Science

2 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Benchmarks SC.K.P.9.1 Recognize that the shape of materials such as paper and clay can be changed by cutting, tearing, crumpling, smashing, or rolling. SC.K.N.1.1 Collaborate with a partner to collect information. SC.K.N.1.2 Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses. LAFS.K.SL.1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. MAFS.K.MD.2.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Note: Limit category counts to be less than or equal to 10. Division of Academics - Department of Science

3 How can the shape of paper change?
Explore: Give students a blank sheet of construction papers and ask them to demonstrate one way they can make their paper, which is matter, change. (Do not give them scissors yet.) Ways students can make the paper change is by: folding it, crumpling it, smashing it, etc. Teacher may want to keep a poster chart to write students’ answers. Division of Academics - Department of Science

4 How can the shape of paper change?
Draw a picture of your paper. Change the shape of your paper. Draw a picture of the many ways you changed your paper. Explore: Ways students can make the paper change is by: folding it, crumpling it, smashing it, etc. Teacher may want to keep a poster chart to write students’ answers. Division of Academics - Department of Science

5 How else can paper change?
Use scissors to cause more changes to paper. Draw a picture of what your paper looks like after you changed it. Explore/Explain: Give out scissors to students and ask them the Titled question. After they have cut then ask them How did paper change when it was cut. Have a class discussion which leads them to realize that the matter can change in size and shape. Division of Academics - Department of Science

6 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Let’s Try this! How an you change the shape of clay? By cutting, tearing, crumpling, smashing, or rolling. Is clay matter? Why or why not? Explore: Give students clay and allow them to explore by shaping it, cutting it, smashing it, and rolling it. Point out that clay is matter and it can also change its shape. 10 Compare and contrast observable properties of paper and clay.
BEFORE AFTER Evaluate: Class discussion. Have students lists the before and after properties of the paper and clay before the change. Properties of matter such as texture, size shape etc. Division of Academics - Department of Science

11 Identify other different ways the shape of matter can be changed.
Melting Mixing Folding Smashing Evaluate: Class discussion. Have students recognize physical changes of matter -such as melting, mixing, folding, smashing, crumpling, etc. Division of Academics - Department of Science
