1 Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter
Grade K Qtr 1 Topic III Observable Properties Division of Academics - Department of Science

2 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Grade K Pacing Guide: Properties of Matter/Practice of Science Benchmarks SC.K.P.8.1: Sort objects by observable properties, such as size, shape, color, temperature (hot or cold), weight (heavy or light) and texture. LAFS.K.SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. MAFS.K.MD.2.3: Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Note: Limit category counts to be less than or equal to 10. Division of Academics - Department of Science

3 What do we call everything around us?
All objects in the world are made of matter. Let’s use our Five Senses to name matter around us! Engage: Read information to students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

4 How can describe objects around you?
Engage: Ask students the questions and as each picture of each have them describe what each is. Answers: color, shape, texture, size, temperature, weight. Division of Academics - Department of Science

5 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Let’s Watch a Video Engage: Click on the picture to watch Discovery Education Video clip on Properties of Matter. You must be signed in to your Discovery Education account. What did you learn about how to describe matter? Division of Academics - Department of Science

6 We can describe objects by color.
We can use color words like blue, red, pink, or orange to describe the way an object looks. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their color. Engage/Explore: Describe color objects with students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

7 We can describe objects by shape.
We can use shape words like round, square, or rectangle to describe the way an object looks. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their shape. Engage/Explore: Describe shape of objects with students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

8 We can describe objects by texture.
We can use the way something feels to describe the way an object looks. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their texture. Engage/Explore: Describe texture of objects with students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

9 We can describe objects by size.
We can use words like big or small to describe an object by its size. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their size. Short Engage/Explore: Describe size of objects with students. Teacher may ask students to name other properties. Long Small Big Division of Academics - Department of Science

10 We can describe objects by weight.
We can use words like heavy or light to describe the weight of an object. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their weight. Engage/Explore: Describe weight of objects with students. Light Heavy Heavy Light Division of Academics - Department of Science

11 We can describe objects by temperature.
We can use words like hot or cold to describe the temperature of an object. Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their temperature. Engage/Explore: Describe temperature represented in each picture with students. Division of Academics - Department of Science

12 We can describe objects by temperature.
Look at the objects below and let’s describe them by their temperature. Cold Cold Engage/Explore: Describe temperature represented in each picture with students. Hot Hot Division of Academics - Department of Science

13 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Let’s Compare! What do we call the observable descriptions of matter? Properties of matter Evaluate: Students will compare each object using observable properties. Allow students to give you the answers. Some observable properties can be used for more than one object. Division of Academics - Department of Science

14 Your turn! SIZE TEMPERATURE WEIGHT TEXTURE
Evaluate: Print slide and have students cut and paste the objects in the corresponding observable property. Then ask students to illustrate/draw their own example next to the glued object.

15 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Reflection Questions What are some ways we can describe objects? How can we sort matter by its properties? How can we describe something by its temperature? When we talk about rough or smooth, what property are we talking about? Evaluate: These are questions to be asked by the teacher at the end of the lesson. Division of Academics - Department of Science

16 Division of Academics - Department of Science
Vocabulary Properties of Matter Matter Objects Sort Weight Size Shape Texture Temperature Solid Liquid Gas Rocks Engage: Read vocabulary to students. It is suggested to have them preprinting. Division of Academics - Department of Science
