1 Chapter 23 – Prepositions
Keys to Understanding the Chapter

2 Prepositions show relationships between things.
For example, think of a worm and an apple. Think of all the relationships possible. The worm is in the apple. The worm is under the apple. The worm is around the apple. The worm is behind the apple. The words highlighted in red are prepositions.

3 Look at the list on page 286 Think about how these words function as prepositions in sentences. Probably the most common preposition is the word OF.

4 The tricky part about prepositions…
There is one thing about prepositions that make them a little tricky. They will never contain the subject of the sentence in them. For example: The group of girl scouts is selling cookies. The words of girls scouts is a prepositional phrase. The subject of the sentence is GROUP, not girl scouts.

5 Review the Common Expressions on Page 288.
You don’t need to memorize anything, but read over the common expressions and make sure you understand how they are used in the sentence and what the meaning is.
