3. Purpose of Permissive Temporary Duty and Excess Leave
Permissive Temporary Duty provides retirees and involuntarily separatees an opportunity to spend a specific amount of time in pre-separation job search and house hunting.
Excess leave provides involuntarily separatees the ability to take leave they currently don’t have available to help with transitioning.
PTDY and Excess leave cannot be in conjunction

4. Eligibility Requirements
Members involuntarily separated under honorable conditions, Active, FTS, or Reservist(must be full-time active duty).
Retiring individuals to include Fleet Reserve and Disability Retirements
Excess leave is for involuntarily separated members only

5. Eligibility requirements
In order to receive PTDY or Excess leave, the retiring or separating service member needs to have an Separation Program Designator (SPD) code that confers transition benefits.
Discharge must be honorable

6. Time Frame Involuntary separatees may take up to 10 days PTDY
Retirees may take up to 20 days PTDY
If retiring/separating overseas or have an overseas home than the retiree or separatee can take up to an extra 10 days PTDY
Involuntary separates may take up to 30 days of excess leave

7. Additional Information
Commanding Officer’s are the approval/disapproval authority and should be based upon eligibility criteria and the command’s operational requirement
PTDY/Excess leave is not an entitlement
Excess leave will be paid back day for day

8. Additional Information
PTDY cannot be combined with liberty weekends, special liberty or holidays
Can be taken in conjunction with chargeable leave
Can be taken all at once or in increments
