1 12/9/14 Today’s Agenda: Students will take an Edmodo quiz over stresses of injury to soft tissues. Student will use an iPad/weebly to create flash cards for: Mechanisms of soft tissue injuries 12 terms from last class Mechanisms of skeletal muscle injuries 13 terms this presentation Bring to Miss Williams for a class assignment grade when finished (easy 100). Students will have a quiz over mechanisms of skeletal muscles injuries next class. Use your flash cards to study.

2 Mechanisms of Skeletal Muscle (mm) Injuries
1. Contusion Deeper contusion = more severe Extra blood forms a membrane encapsulated blood tumor 2. Strain – stretch/tear/rip in mm fascia, or tendon MOI Forceful muscle contraction Nuero-inefficiency of agonist/antagonist contractions Strength imbalance b/w agonist/antagonist muscles

3 3. Cramps 4. Spasm 5. Guarding Painful involuntary contraction
Usually due to dehydration and electrolyte loss 4. Spasm Reflex contraction caused by trauma to upper motor neuron or musculoskeletal system 5. Guarding Protective mechanism that causes an involuntary contraction following injury

4 6. Muscle Soreness 7. Muscle Stiffness Acute-onset Delayed-onset
Accompanies fatigue and occurs during and immediately after exercise Delayed-onset Onset is 12 hours post-exercise Most intense hours post-exercise Relief within 3-4 days 7. Muscle Stiffness Occurs when a group of muscles have been over-exerted for a prolonged period

5 Mechanisms of Chronic Skeletal mm Injuries
8. Myositis - inflammation of muscle tissue 9. Fasciitis - inflammation of tissue separating mm 10. Tendinitis - inflammation of tendon 11. Tenosynovitis - inflammation of synovial sheath surrounding tendon 12. Atrophy - muscle wasting 13. Contracture - shortened muscle
