6 Glucose + Oxygen = Energy to Contract and produce heat  Glucose: stored in the muscles as glycogen  Oxygen: used to burn glucose into energy  Glucose + O2 = Energy for contraction and heat

7 Waste Products produced are CO2 and Water  Carbon Dioxide and Water: waste products from the production of energy for muscles  Lactic Acid: causes the “burn” in muscles from a lack of oxygen (Without O2, glucose breaks down into lactic acid)

8 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Muscle Cramps – spontaneous, often painful muscle contractions  Cause – prolonged exercise or dehydration  Treatment – stretch, ice, fluid

9 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Strain / Tear – a painful injury that involves the tearing of muscle fibers  Cause – traumatic injury or overuse  Treatment – rest and ice

10 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Tendinitis – inflammation of a tendon  Cause – injury, overuse or aging  Treatment – proper warm up, avoid overuse, ice

11 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Shin Splints – pain in the front of the lower leg from overuse  Cause – overuse  Treatment – Rest, proper warm up of muscle group

12 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Hernia – a hole or tear in the abdominal wall  Cause – overuse  Treatment – surgery

13 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Muscular Dystrophy – a disorder characterized by muscle weakness and loss of tissue  Cause – inherited  Treatment – no cure, therapy slows the muscle loss

14 Muscle Injuries and Diseases:  Contusion – a bruised muscle  Cause – a direct blow or repeated blows from an outside force on a muscle  Treatment - R.I.C.E.

15 RICE Method  Rest: Protect the injured area from further harm by stopping play. You may also use a protective device (i.e., crutches, sling).  Ice: Apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth. (Remove ice after 20 minutes.)  Compression: Lightly wrap the injured area in a soft bandage or ace wrap.  Elevation: Raise it to a level above the heart
