3 THIS WEEK’S PRACTICE QUESTION
DUE: NEXT THURSDAY

4 Q1a: CREATIVITY TASK ONE: HOW MIGHT YOU DEFINE CREATIVITY?

5 Creativity is the use of imagination or original ideas to create something, and being inventive.

6 The use of imagination or original ideas to create something, and being inventive.

7 David Gaunlett argues in ‘Making is Connecting’ (2007) that ‘creativity is the product of connecting and engaging in a collaborative way.’

8 What is ‘creativity’? In coursework you may have used creativity in a number of ways: Making a creative plot for your trailer (experimenting with non-linear and linear plots/ using different themes for a magazine) Using creative and effective camera shots (Replicating professional trailer camera shots and implementing shots of your own). Adding certain effects to filmed footage using certain programs (Sound effects from Freesound, creating title screens on Adobe Premire and After effects) and so on.

9 Q1a: CREATIVITY What was the intended outcome of the product?
How were these outcomes achieved? What stylistic techniques were used to appeal to the audience?

10 ‘ Creativity’ Essay Plan

11 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Things to note: Key words: Creativity, develop, skills, media practioner -Make sure that you refer to these words throughout the essay to keep it to the point. This essay accounts for 25 marks – you have roughly half an hour to answer this question, make sure you don’t spend too much time on it! Remember to mention how you have improved your skills as a media practioner from AS to A2 – use examples from each piece of coursework. Try to use a theorist for every point you make in the essay.

12 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Introduction: Briefly mention how you used this throughout your coursework and which products you produced (trailer/poster/magazine)… I demonstrated this throughout my AS and A2 coursework by creating an opening sequence and a trailer for my production. My trailer presents creative camera shots, storylines and editing which were inspired by professional trailers and films that I used to construct my own production.

13 Use a theorist to back up your point:
How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner? Introduction: Use a theorist to back up your point: David Gaunlett argues in ‘Making is Connecting’ (2007) that ‘creativity is the product of connecting and engaging in a collaborative way.’ –My media product demonstrates this a number of different ways…

14 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
First Point: . My creativity for filming at first when I started my AS coursework was fairly limited due to my lack of experience as a media practitioner. I therefore used digital technologies such as the Web 2.0 to research professional opening sequences on sites such as Youtube and IMDB for inspiration

15 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
First Point: Argument: Arguably I have been ‘dictated’ by the web myself, as I watched and used professional productions on sites such as Youtube and IMDB for inspiration. However I then used these conventions to expand my knowledge and create my own production by implementing camera shots in my own unique way. This is particularly evident in my AS/A2 coursework… [Example of usage in coursework] – Pick out effective camera shots in trailer.

16 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Second Point- In the post production stage of my coursework, I used Adobe Premiere in a creative way to edit my filmed footage and a site called ‘Freesound.org’ to add effective soundtracks to my production to make it appear more realistic. This program allowed me to experiment with my filmed footage by adjusting camera shots and adding certain effects to title screens with the help of After Effects, therefore I developed my skills individually.

17 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Second Point: Theory: Henry Jenkins (2006) ‘Participatory culture’ – This is a culture in which private persons do not act as consumers only, but also act as contributors or producers.

18 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Second Point: Argument: I used my creativity to involve myself in Jenkins’ ‘Participatory Culture’ as I developed from being a consumer to becoming a producer after creating my production. The easy access web 2.0 sites such as YouTube allowed me to identify typical features of Drama genre film and use them in my own production. YouTube and Facebook also encourages media practitioners to upload their media products for free. I can therefore use these sites to distribute my product and share my creativeness to web users around the World.

19 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Third Point: I used creativity in applying my production to a particular genre. For example my trailer was a Thriller genre production, therefore I needed to use creative props, conventions, soundtracks, characters and camera shots to make my production recognisable as a Thriller narrative.

20 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Third Point: Theory: Rick Altman (Film/Genre,1999) – ‘Audiences interpret the genre of a film based on past experiences of watching narratives of similar genre, giving them ideas of what to expect.

21 How have you used Creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner?
Third Point: Argument: I watched professional trailers in my research section, and identified typical connotations which Altman claims the audiences would associate with Thriller movies (scenes of crime, violence, murder, etc.) My creativity was then used in creating characters with dark backgrounds (serial killers) and choosing an effective location to make the ‘Thriller’ element come to life by filming in a dark isolated garage for a murder scene.
