1 HUMAN POPULATION pg. 29 RS

2 I can explain what affects human populations.
Learning target I can explain what affects human populations. Today I am… learning how fertility rates and age structure influences future growth rates for a population. So that I’ll be able to… understand how future population predictions are made. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can write at least one sentence explaining what an age structure diagram is and how it’s helpful.

3 Facts about population
Overpopulation is can be driven by the increasing life expectancy.  Every twenty minutes, the human population grows by over 3000.  4. Population growth isn’t going to put a strain on resources only.  5. Considering anticipated resources that will be available, the optimal world population would be about two billion people.

4 Recent trends in human population growth
Growth rate has slowed Growth rates vary by region

5 Demographers study: Size Density Distribution
Studying populations Demographers study: Size Density Distribution

6 Replacement fertility
Studying populations Demographers study: Total fertility rates Replacement fertility Age Structure Sex ratios

7 Total fertility rate (TFR)
The average # of children a woman has during her lifetime.

8 Why is total fertility rate important?
It helps demographers predict future population growth rates.

9 Replacement fertility
The TFR for a nation that would keep its population size stable.

10 The # of people of each age within a population.
Age structure The # of people of each age within a population.

11 Pre-reproductive age Reproductive age Post-reproductive age
Age Structure diagram Pre-reproductive age Reproductive age Post-reproductive age

12 # males compared to # females
Sex ratios # males compared to # females

13 Group discussion Do you think the age structure diagram representing China’s population would look more like Canada or Madagascar?

14 How is an age structure diagram helpful?
It helps demographers understand how a population might change.

16 Video (7 mins) China’s one child policy
Don’t watch we will watch this in class

17 Reading Pg. 234 – 237 Write down 2 facts from the reading. Bullet point the facts and write the pages at the top.

18 Why care about population growth?
The number of people sharing Earth’s resources is getting larger. The current rate of population growth isn’t sustainable. By 2022, the population of India is projected to overtake that of China, and will reach 1.7 billion by 2050.
