3. Who is Tenskwatawa? Member of Shawnee nation, born 1775
Lack physicality of his brothers & tribesmen. Wasn’t taught how to hunt.
Attempted to learn to the ways of the villages medicine man. When the medicine man died in 1804, it became evident Tenskwatawa could not meet the needs of his village & quickly turned back to alcohol.
Fell into trance after smoking his pipe. Family believed him to be dead & prepared his funeral services
Woke up claiming that the “Master of Light” a Shawnee deity had visited him
Indian dependence on European materials (guns, alcohol, iron cookware, glass beads) was the worst possible type of sin

4. Most Indians were skeptical of his message, but eventually they began to accept his message
Brother Tecumseh was trying to build a united front amongst the Indian tribes (against Americans)
The Prophet (Tenskwatawa) & Tecumseh moved their followers to Prophetstown along the Tippecanoe river.
By 1811 such a large number of Indians had moved into the Indiana Territory that white settlers asked the government to protect them

5. The Battle of Tippecanoe
William Henry Harrison leads an army against the Indians in the fall of 1811
The Prophet decides to attack the Anglo settlers
Claims the “Master of Life” came to him & told him that the American Indians would succeed.
The Indians attack Harrison’s men before daybreak on November 7,1811
American Army suffers heavy losses. 62 men killed & 126 wounded
Harrison guessed at least 40 Indians were killed
American troops drove off the Indians & burned Prophetstown to the ground

6. Leading to the War of 1812
Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa continued in their resistance efforts. During the War of 1812, they allied themselves with the British against the United States
Tecumseh lost his life at the Battle of the Thames in 1813
