1 EXPLORING THREE PHILOSOPHIES OF ANCIENT CHINA: CONFUCIANISM, DAOISM & LEGALISM
January 16, 2014

2 DO NOW! Think about the three disciplinary approaches we considered in class yesterday. You were asked to select the approach that you thought would be most effective. NOW, analyze the three approaches in the context of the three schools of thought you explored last night. Match each disciplinary approach with a school of thought.  Approach #1: Assign students who are guilty of bullying a “big brother” or “big sister” who is a respected older student from another grade. The big brother or sister would teach the student how to behave properly.  Approach #2: Allow students who are guilty of bullying to go unpunished, hoping that they will eventually learn from their mistakes and correct their behavior.  Approach #3: Have school authorities put in writing rules about unacceptable behavior and assign harsh punishments for violating the rules. For example, students caught bullying will be immediately expelled.

3 Thinking About the PMS Core Values & Beliefs
With which of the three Ancient Chinese schools of thought is Portland Middle School’s policy about appropriate behavior most closely aligned?

4 THREE VERY DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES

5 THREE VERY DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES
Legalism

6 REMEMBERING THE PAST Historians remember events and people of the past in many different ways. One of the most public ways of remembering is to design a monument that reflects the people or event. You will work in pairs to create a monument recognizing the key features of Confucianism, Daoism, or Legalism. What is the purpose of a monument? Where are the monuments in Portland located? What do they memorialize? Where else have you seen monuments?

7 EXAMPLES OF MONUMENTS… HAVE YOU SEEN THESE?

8 YOUR TASK You will work in pairs to design and illustrate a monument remembering your assigned ancient Chinese school of thought. You should use the Chapter 21 in your textbook to gather information about your assigned topic. Your monument can take any shape you would like… YOU are the historian in charge of deciding how best to remember the school of thought! Your monument should reflect the philosophies represented by the schools of thought.

9 JIGSAW: TIME TO SHARE! SHARE YOUR MONUMENT with a pair who focused on a different school of thought! Explain your design. Be sure to highlight how it represents your school of thought’s unique features.

10 WRAPPING IT ALL UP! Consider what we have learned about Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Which school of thought do you think would most effectively unite a divided Ancient China? Provide at least two reasons to support your decision.
