Measuring Matter Chapter 1.2 Physical Science

2 Weight There are two ways to measure how much matter an object has-weight and mass. Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on you. You weigh less on the moon because the force of gravity is weaker Weight is good for everyday use, but scientists dislike using weight because it is not consistent. Scientists prefer to measure mass.

3 Mass Unlike weight, an objects mass will not change if the force of gravity changes Scientist measure mass using the International System of Units (SI) Gram, miligram, kilogram

4 Volume Volume is the amount of space that matter occupies.
Volume of Cube=length x width x height Units of volume: Cubic centimeters (cm3) Liter (L) Milliliter (mL) How can you measure the volume of an object with an irregular shape?

5 Density Density is a measurement of how much mass is contained in a given volume. Units: g/ cm3 g/mL g/L
