1 Title: What is blood? Date: 29/11/2018
What you need to do: Write the Lesson Title and date in your book Copy today’s learning objectives and keywords into your book Can you explain what any of the keywords mean? Title: What is blood? Date: 29/11/2018 Objectives: Today we are learning to answer the following questions: Name and identify the components of blood. Describe the role of the different components of blood. Describe what tissue fluid and explain its function. Keywords: Red blood cell White blood cell Plasma 1

2 How many times does your heart beat in 1 day?
1,000 10,000 100,000 1,000,000 Answer = C

3 What % of your body weight that is made up by your blood ?
4% 8% 16% 32% Answer = B

4 How long is the life span of a red blood cell? 4 hours 4 days 4 months
4 years Answer = C

5 How many litres of blood are contained in the human body?
2 3 4 5 Answer = D

6 What is blood made of? Why do our bodies need blood?

8 Blood is a mixture of different types of cells suspended in a straw coloured liquid called plasma. The main function of blood is to: carry oxygen and nutrients to the body’ cells; remove waste products; and protect the body against infection. Different components of the blood carry out different roles. ??? ??? ???? ???? ???? ?????? ?????? Word bank: roles, cells, plasma, infection, blood, waste, oxygen,

9 Component of Blood What does it look like? Main role Other Details
What you need to do: Read the information on the Blood Fact Sheet. Draw the table below in your book. Use the information in the Fact Sheet to complete the table Component of Blood What does it look like? Main role Other Details Red Cells White Cells Plasma Cut and stick or a fill in.

10 Suffers of sickle cell anemia have symptoms which include tiredness caused by a lack oxygen getting to their muscles. Level 4 / 5 :Which type of blood cell does sickle cell anemia affect. Give a reason for your answer. Level 5 /6: Describe how blood cells from a sickle cell sufferer are different. Explain why this would prevent them from performing their role effectively. Level 6/7: Suggest something apart from shape of the blood cell that might reduce its ability to transport oxygen A “sickle” cell Level 4 / 5 : Red blood cell (4). The role of RBC is to transport oxygen to the muscles and body tissues (5) Level 5 / 6 : Sickle cells are crescent shape, normally RBC are biconcave (5). A change in shape reduces the surface area over which they can take up oxygen for transport (6) Level 6 / 7 : A reduction in the level of haemoglobin / production of haemoglobin which does not work as effectively.

11 Outcomes: I can name 4 things that make up blood (level 4)
What you need to do: Read the information below Write in your book what level think you achieved today. Give a reason for your choice. Write one thing you need to understand to reach the next level. Outcomes: I can name 4 things that make up blood (level 4) I can describe the role of 4 different things that make up the blood (Level 5) I can explain one reason why sickle shaped blood cells are not as good at transporting oxygen (level 6) I can suggest 2 reasons why sickle shaped blood cells are not as good at transporting oxygen (level 7)

13 Malaria is caused by a microorganism that gets into the blood.
Describe how the number of white blood cells in someone with malaria would be different to healthy person? Give a reason for your answer. Haemophilia is a disease caused by blood not clotting properly. How might you expect a blood sample from someone with haemohilia and a healthy person to be different?
