Mercantilism What is mercantilism? “Triangular Trade”
An economic system with the overall goal of increasing a nation’s total wealth. (Exports to other nations should exceed imports from them.) This was done by extracting raw materials from colonies and using them to created finished goods to sell to other countries. “Triangular Trade”

Timber and Ship Building Supplies (Rope, Masts, Tar) Dried Fish Rum and other Manufactured Trade Goods

Middle Colonies Economy
PRODUCTS Called the Bread Colonies Farmed Wheat, Oat, Barley and Rye. Made homespun products. Traded very little.

Southern Colonies Economy
PRODUCTS Farmed Tobacco, Rice, Indigo, and Cotton. Trade “cash crops” farmed on Plantations. Purchase manufactured goods. Quickly became dependent on slavery.

Why did indentured servitude decline as a source of labor?
Decrease in English birth rate and colonial death rate. Increase in English prosperity. Avoidance of harsh working conditions in Southern colonies. Fear of instability from former servants in society. (Bacon’s rebellion )
