Congress of Vienna 1815 Meeting led by ______________________ of Austria after Napoleon defeated. Conservatives (Monarchs, nobles, church, peasants) - agree to Concert of Europe to preserve traditional ways. Believe in the STATUS QUO. AGAINST freedom of speech and press and suppress protests and rebellion.

Liberals & nationalists- inspired by the enlightenment and the ______?
Liberals – middle class( business owners, lawyers, bankers) Want govt based on written constututions, rulers elected by the people. Support ________ rights of all people(life, liberty, equality) Support laissez faire economics of ______________________. Nationalists – pride in one’s country. Austrian, Russian and Ottoman empires include people of many different nationalities that were conquered at some point. What did these different peoples want?

Revolts in the Balkans Serbia – starts 1804 and by 1830 with support of Russians, Serbia wins autonomy (self rule) led by Milos Obrenovic. Greece – By 1830 some Greek provinces become independent of the Ottomans. Led by Metternich rebellions in Spain and Italy put down.

Ticket out the door Rows 1, 3 = play the role of Prince Clemens von Metternich and write a persuasive 3 -4 sentence speech supporting why conservative ideas of the 1800’s should be preserved. Rows 2,5 = play the role of a liberal in Europe and write a 3-4 sentence speech supporting why the conservative ideas of the 1800’s should be replaced, include what new ideas should be used in it’s place. Rows 4, 6 = play the role of a nationalist in Europe living in the Balkans (Serbia or Greece) and write a 3-4 sentence speech supporting why the native peoples should break free from the old conservative rule of the Ottomans and have AUTONOMY.
