DEFINING RESEARCH A PRELIMINARIES Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013). works with a system or method unbiased; all angles presented Inquiries, Investigations, and Immersion RESEARCH 101 Building on the Basics view your point Research is a systematic and objective creation of knowledge. THE RESEARCH PROCESS B DEFINING RESEARCH A PRELIMINARIES Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013). Identifying a Problem works with a system or method unbiased; all angles presented Reporting Research Inquiries, Investigations, and Immersion RESEARCH 101 Building on the Basics Reviewing Literature view your point What general issue affects majority of individuals your age? How does this issue affect you personally? What specific aspect of this issue concerns you the most? Can you think of a specific solution that may help address the aspect of the issue you identified? How will understanding this issue help others? Research is a systematic and objective creation of knowledge. (Creswell, 2013) Breaking down data Representing data Explaining data Specifying a Problem Justifying it Suggesting the need to study it RESEARCH Selecting samples Obtaining permissions Gathering info Identify the purpose Narrow the purpose to questions Locating, Selecting, Summarizing Resources What is it? Why do it? a creative process Analyzing, Interpreting Data Specifying Purpose Present the answer Collect data to answer to the question Collecting Data Pose a question VON CHRISTOPHER G. 5 Analyzing, Interpreting Data
QUALITATIVE & QUANTITATIVE C THE RESEARCH PROCESS B DEFINING RESEARCH A PRELIMINARIES Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013). Identifying a Problem QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Exploring a problem and developing a detailed understanding of a central phenomenon Having the literature review play a minor role but justify the problem Stating the purpose and research questions in a general and broad way Collecting data based on words from a small number of individuals Analyzing the data for description and themes using text analysis and interpreting the larger meaning of the findings Writing the report using flexible, emerging structures and evaluative criteria, and including the researchers’ subjective reflexivity and bias QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH Describing a problem through trends or an explanation of the relationship among variables Providing a major role for the literature Creating purpose statements, research questions, and hypotheses that are specific, narrow, measurable, and observable Collecting numeric data from a large number of people using instruments with preset questions and responses Using statistical analysis, and interpreting results by comparing them with prior predictions and past research Writing the research report using standard, fixed structure. Approach is unbiased.
