1 What were some of the Significant “precedents” of the Ancient Greeks?
The Greeks developed political, cultural & philosophical ideas which are key foundations for many traditions in Western Civilization 1

2 “Classical” Age of Greece (1000 – 300 “B.C.”)
BCE = Before Common Era = BC = Before Christ CE = Common Era = AD = Anno Domini (Latin for The Year of Our Lord)

3 Achievements of the Ancient Greeks
Intellectual – Fostered a curious, independent spirit, that valued each individual human being. Literary – Created great poems and dramas that have had widespread influence on cultures around the world. Politics - Democracy and other government structures still used today originated in some Greek city states. Astronomy – Greeks were the first people to make accurate predictions about the sun, moon and stars. Science & Math – Greeks were the first to document their investigations of events and patterns in the natural world for future generations. Philosophy –Greeks explored and documented investigations of human nature that would influence future thinkers. (Ex: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) Sports - The Greeks start the Olympic games. Art – Greek paintings, architecture and sculptures set the norms of classical beauty for the Western (ex: Parthenon & Acropolis)
