1 Physical Literacy Individuals who are physically literate move with competence in a wide variety of physical activities that benefit the development of the whole person. They are able to demonstrate a variety of movements confidently, competently, creatively, and strategically across a wide range of health-related physical activities. These skills enable individuals to make healthy, active choices throughout their life

Literacy in the 21st Century is the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable achievement, personal well being and full participation in an interconnected and changing world community.

4 See Front Matter Use chart as a reference - “at a glance” summary of the Movement Competence strand. Movement Skills – stability, locomotion, manipulation plus Movement Concepts – body awareness, spatial awareness, effort and relationship with movement principles taught as needed. Students do not need to know the names of the various principles but will be learning how to apply the principles as they learn and practice movement skills. Plus Movement strategies – building thinking skills as students apply what they know about movement skills and concepts to a variety of activities. MS are taught through a process of experiencing the activity, developing an awareness of the tactics needed to succeed, making decisions about how to be successful in the activity, applying skills and learning new skills as needed, then using the skills in an activity. Taken together, the goal is that students will develop the competence and confidence to participate in physical activities.

Self-awareness and self-monitoring Adaptive, management and coping skills Critical and Creative Thinking Planning Processing Drawing conclusions / presenting results Reflecting / evaluating Interpersonal Skills Communication Skills Relationship and Social Skills Living Skills – not new. Placement of LS is different. Changes based on research and feedback. Personal Skills – a new component. Focus is on students knowing themselves and applying that knowledge to learning in the context of HPE. Second part of Personal Skills involves students developing the adaptive, management and coping skills to deal with challenges and changes in HPE and in their lives. Interpersonal skills – similar to previous curriculum – communication and social skills. Critical and creative thinking processes – part of previous curriculum. Focus is on helping students develop the skills they need to solve problems, set goals, make decisions.
