Teaching and Learning with Technology at UConn New Faculty Orientation August 23, 2018 Karen Skudlarek

2 High Tech Classrooms Supported by AV Division on Academic IT (AIT) at UITS How to learn about the classrooms Look at pictures of the room and the technology available at Visit the room before class to acclimate yourself Classroom Technology Training offered by AIT (make appointments online) Support: Phone: (860) Available during Fall & Spring Semesters: M-Th 7:30a-9:00p & Fri 7:30a-6:00p Website: Software Accessible on High Tech Classroom Computers Use UConn Anyware (virtual applications for UConn) for Teaching and Learning:  Includes software such as Minitab, SAS, SPSS, Stata, Matlab, Mathematica, Maple, etc.

3 High Tech Classrooms All generally scheduled Hi-Tech classrooms have computers You can bring your own laptop (Mac & Surface users need to bring an adapter) Using the classroom computer? Logon with your NetID and password Use the P: drive for storage but do not save data to the hard drive Logoff Computer and Turn off System When You are Finished Unless the professor in the next class needs it then just logoff the computer Recording live lectures is available in some classrooms Teach from: only has camera for instructor – good for lecture capture & streaming. Not used for teaching to the class from remote site. Teach to and from: has camera for instructor and a camera on the students Wireless Presentation Devices: WePresent: It allows instructors to untether from the podium while sharing content from their Apple, Android, or windows device.

4 Collaborative Learning Classroom
Located in the library room HBL (level 2, to the left of the elevators) Five tables with up to six people (total 30) All furniture is moveable There are about personal sized whiteboards that are mountable on the wall or the end of the desk. WePresent is available allowing the instructor and students to be able to share from their devices/laptops. The intent of the room is to give instructors a space to experiment with their teaching style, moving toward an active learning environment.

Kaltura Lecture capture and streaming/recording Two aspects of Kaltura: Capture the recording CaptureSpace installed locally on computer Upload/Edit/Share the recording Kaltura My Media can be accessed through HuskyCT the My Courses page by clicking on MyMedia or at Faculty/Staff/Students have accounts in Kaltura Quizzes can be added to videos and are integrated in HuskyCT Note: You will need to close caption a video if a student needs that accommodation.
