1 Cellular respiration

2 Cellular respiration The body changes carbohydrates into glucose after a meal When cells need energy, they break down glucose and use oxygen from lungs to make energy (ATP) in the mitochondria of the cell This is called cellular respiration The respiration equation: C6H O CO2 + 6H2O + energy

3

4 Stages of respiration stage 1
Glucose molecules are broken down in the cytoplasm No oxygen is used Very little energy is released

5 Stages of respiration stage 2
Oxygen is used Glucose and oxygen are broken down in the mitochondria Lots of energy is released in this stage of respiration

6 Comparing photosynthesis and respiration
Photosynthesis and respiration keep levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen fairly constant in the atmosphere During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water produce sugar and oxygen During respiration, glucose and oxygen produce CO2 and water. They are opposite equations.

7 fermentation A. Fermentation produces energy for the cell without using Oxygen 2 Types of Fermentation: alcoholic and lactic acid Alcoholic Fermentation 1. Yeast produces energy using alcoholic fermentation 2. Sugars are broken down and alcohol, CO2, and small amounts of energy are produced. (EX.) Bread: the CO2 in yeast causes dough to rise and makes the air pockets seen in baked bread (EX.) Beer: bubbles in beer and wine are caused by CO2 that is produced during fermentation

8 Fermentation (Con’T) Lactic Acid Fermentation
1. During heavy exercise, cells use up oxygen, body makes energy without oxygen by pulling energy from muscles in a process called fermentation. 2. This produces energy and the by product lactic-acid. 3.Lactic acid builds up and makes muscles ache, and feel weak and sore.
