8 Robust Design Impact Model
If we look at the very core of Robust Design, the main purpose is to reduce the sensitivity of a design to variation. But if we extend this by asking what the IMPACT of sensitivity is, then we can build an impact model, such as described in Blessing and Chakrarbarti. Ultimately, this links design sensitivity with company profit. This model is built on a combination of our experience, i.e. actual cases from industry, interviews, papers and cases from our research and projects that we have been involved in as design engineers. We basically asked ‘what was the company trying to achieve in this case’.

9 The Self Assessment - On http://robustdesign.org/
Then, for each of the identified impact factors, it is possible to ask: Is this important to us? How are we performing on this factor? – we get a quick assessment of which, if any, factors that are relevant to look at.

28 Can we make a universal index and certification for product robustness?

29 Requirements for a… Product Robustness Index (PRI)
Dimensionless. Comparable for similar products. Suitable to any type of quantifiable performance. Represents product betterment to consumer. Suitable for measurement and simulation.

30 Product Robustness Index (PRI) … A high level glimpse of the proposal
PRI = MEAN(WF1●PRIF1; WF1●PRIF2; WF1●PRIF3… WF1●PRIFn) The PRI is the Mean value of the PRI of each of the functions, multiplied by the importance weighting factor of each function. PRIF1 = Unit of Variation Variation Range (V) V: For 20±0.25𝑚𝑚 PRI = =4
