B. Rush F2013 Modified byh DYH Firmicutes: Clostridium chauvoei Gram positive, anaerobic, spindle shaped rod bacterium that is causative agent of the disease “Blackleg.” Form chains of 2-3 bacteria Infects cattle, sheep, and pigs. Mortality rates are high. Preventative vaccine is most effective measure. Spore forming! 2 Firmicutes: Clostridium chauvoei
B. Rush F2013 Modified byh DYH Firmicutes: Clostridium chauvoei Genome estimated to be 2,825,126 BP long. C. chauvoei toxin A, (CctA,) exotoxin protein is the major virulence factor; creates unregulated pores in membranes of target cells, and causes hemorrhaging symptoms for which the disease is named. Other factors include Dnase, (β-toxin,) and Hyaluranase, (γ-toxin.) Kills in just a few hours. Young healthy animals are at the greatest risk! Can be treated with heavy antibiotics. Deceased must be burned, or buried and ground covered in lime.
