1 Give reasons for your answer
Which is the odd one out? Give reasons for your answer car volcano house

2 The human impact on the environment
To identify the activities that affecting the Earth and its environment. Key Terms: Global warming, Deforestation, Over-harvesting, Pollution, Acid rain

3 What is causing the problems on Earth?
It is estimated that the total number of humans living on Earth is 7.5 billion. In 1990 there were 5 billion In 2007 there were 6.5 billion. All these people need food, homes, fuels etc What does this mean for Earth?

4 Human Population is growing! What does this mean for Earth?

5 Global warming What is it? An increase in the earth’s temperature
Causes: The green house effect… CO2: Deforestation, growing population Methane: Mining activities, food production Nitrogen Oxides: Burning fossil fuels, fertilisers. CFCs: Fridges, air conditioning, aerosols. Effects: Changes to weather patterns e.g. storms, drought, floods

6 Deforestation What it is?
Cutting down large areas of woodland (rain forest). Causes: Logging- wood is used for construction and furniture Land is cleared to build houses or roads (infrastructure) Land is cleared for agriculture, producing food for the growing population. Cattle grazing, plants, palm oil) Effects: Reduced biodiversity, Medicine, more CO2, soil erosion and flooding,

7 Over harvesting What is it?
Involves hunting/harvesting a food source until it is at risk of extinction e.g. fishing. Cause: Growing population Demands for cheaper food Commercial fishing techniques (trawling, drift nets) Effects Fish stocks in the worlds oceans have fallen dramatically. (1970s 250,000 tonnes to ,000 tonnes) Food chains are effected therefore no future fish Balance of the ecosystem

8 Acid Rain What it is? Acid which has a pH of 4 (less than 7) Causes:
Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil & gas) releases a mixture of gases. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with the rain clouds in the atmosphere to make acid rain Effects: Forests: slows growth, removes nutrients from the soil, damages leaves preventing photosynthesis. Lakes & rivers: washes nutrients from the soil into rivers and streams, lowering the pH and effecting the animals and plants. Corrosion of buildings.

9 Destruction of habitats
What is it? Destroying the natural habitat of animals and plants Cause: Growing population Increased demand for housing, roads (infrastructure), food, electricity, fuel. Effects Reduced habitats for native animals and plants Reduced biodiversity More animals becoming endangered and risk extinction

10 Brain storming activity
Whose activities are affecting the Earth and its environment? What is changing? Why are these things happening? Where is the problem visible?

11 What do you think these images represent?

12 The human impact on the environment
LI: To plan and write a newspaper report on human activity.

13 Writing a Newspaper article
The Different Types of Newspaper. There are two types: Tabloid and Broadsheet. Choose which type of newspaper your news report will appear in. Tabloid Broadsheet Mix fact and emotion More fact than emotion Shorter sentences Longer sentences. Use biased and emotional language. Stories are mixed together Divided into clear sections May have less news so that there is room for stories about famous people. Focus on major world events and politics. Less complex vocabulary. Complicated vocabulary. Focus on famous people, private lives and scandal Generally concerned with events in major cities of the world.

14 Decide on your Headline!
Think of a short and eye catching headline “The only place your children will see a lion is in a Zoo!” “Climate change is happening and it’s our fault” “Human’s are destroying planet Earth!” “We are draining the earth of its resources” “Greedy humans will cause Earth’s destruction!”

15 Where do you start? The first paragraph should be an introduction.
Choose an image to show what you are talking about… Write an couple of sentences to tell the reader what you are going to write about in your report.

16 Where do you start? The first paragraph should be an introduction.
Choose an image to show what you are talking about… Write an couple of sentences to tell the reader what you are going to write about in your report. Here are some questions to help you: Whose activities are affecting the Earth and its environment? What is changing? Why are these things happening? Where is the problem visible? How can we find out more?

17 What about the rest of the article?
Each paragraph should have a topic sentence at its beginning (a sentence which summarises what the paragraph is about). E.g. Mining & destruction of habitats, Pollution & Acid Rain, The Green house effect, Over-harvesting The news report should be in chronological order. Each paragraph should be linked with a connective. You should include a quotation from someone.

18 Your Conclusion What should we do to help the environment?
Are there any simple tips? You must give at least 5; maybe you could come up with a memory mnemonic.

19 Your newspaper article should include:
A catchy title Information about the cause of the problem. (Acid rain, Global Warming, Destruction of habitat & Pollution) The effects of the problem What can we do to stop this happening Useful web-sites BBC website Young People's Trust for the Environment - Information for Kids on Climate change and other environmental facts and charities
