3 Let’s Quickly Review Verbals!
A verbal is a word that is made from a verb, has the power of a verb, but acts as another part of speech. Gerunds, participles, and infinitives are verbals. A verbal phrase includes modifiers and objects. Working on their school project, the students huddled around the laptop computer.

4 A gerund is a verb form that ends in –ing but is used as a noun (makes it different than a participle which acts as an adjective). Reading is John’s favorite hobby. A participle is a verb form ending in –ing or –ed. A participle is used as an adjective. The shaking building frightened me during the earthquake.

5 Every student needs to study.
An infinitive is a verb form that is usually preceded by the word “to.” It can be used as an adjective, adverb, or noun. Every student needs to study.

Frustrated by her teacher, Scout Finch decides that she does not like school. Jem, Scout’s older brother, likes playing football. My favorite character, Atticus Finch, agrees to defend Tom Robinson. © 2015 K.Patrick (OCBeachTeacher)

The Great Gatsby was a challenging book for me. Jay Gatsby, the narrator’s mysterious neighbor, enjoys hosting parties. To help Gatsby, Nick arranges a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. Tom Buchanan sees Gatsby staring at Daisy. Although many think the novel is only about romance, it’s mostly about the decaying American Dream. © 2015 K.Patrick (OCBeachTeacher)
