1 Unit 2 Classification

2 3 Domains: 1. Bacteria includes Eubacteria Kingdom 2
3 Domains: 1.  Bacteria      includes Eubacteria Kingdom 2. Archae      includes Archaebacteria Kingdom 3. Eukarya      includes: Protist Kingdom, Fungi Kingdom, Plant Kingdom, Animal Kingdom

3 Characteristics of organisms in each kingdom:
1. Eubacteria Kingdom: -unicellular - prokaryotes (no nucleus) -cell walls with peptidoglycan

4 2. Archaebacteria Kingdom: -unicellular -prokaryotes (no nucleus) -cell walls without
peptidoglycan -contain unusual lipids in cell membrane not found in any other organisms

5 3. Protist Kingdom: -eukaryotes (have nucleus) -most are unicellular (except algae) -some are autotrophs (plant-like) -some are heterotrophs (animal-like)

6 4. Fungi Kingdom: -eukaryotes
(have nucleus) -most are multicellular (except yeast) -heterotrophs (must obtain food)

7 5. Plant Kingdom: -multicellular -eukaryotes -autotrophs
(make own food through photosynthesis) -non-mobile -have cell walls

8 6. Animal Kingdom: -multicellular -eukaryotes -heterotrophs
(must obtain food) -mobile -do NOT have cell walls

9 Classification within Kingdoms
Breaking Down Kingdoms Or as I remember it… K – Kingdom P – Phylum C – Class O – Order F – Family G – Genus S - Species King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti

10 Linnaeus's System of Classification
Grizzly bear Black bear Giant panda Red fox Abert squirrel Coral snake Sea star Linnaeus’s hierarchical system of classification uses seven taxonomic categories. This illustration shows how a grizzly bear, Ursus arctos, is grouped within each taxonomic category. Only some representative species are illustrated for each category above the species level. 11 Now it’s your turn… Using the information from today’s notes create a flow chart that shows how organisms are classified. Include Domains, Kingdoms, and classification within kingdoms. Provide a short description for each level of classification
