1 Substitute Teacher Orientation
Welcome! Substitute teaching is an important educational component in our schools. It is a rare teacher who never needs a substitute for either personal or professional reasons. By the time they graduate from high school, students can spend approximately eight months with a substitute teacher. Principals, teachers, parents and students value a skilled substitute teacher, as they can provide a positive continuum of learning while the regular teacher is away. Because we want our substitute teachers to be at their best for our students, we have developed this orientation to help you get a successful start in our schools. 3 ROE VERIFICATION The first step in becoming a qualified substitute teacher is to request verification through our local Regional Office of Education. To do so, access the Regional Office of Education #11 website. Click on the licensure link, scroll down to the substitute information and click on the Sub Packet link. The verification process includes a criminal history records check and a physical examination. You will also be required to schedule and complete a fingerprinting background check. If you have not yet done so, you will need to secure a substitute teaching license through the Illinois State Board of Education. Directions for how to do that are also included on the Regional Office of Education’s website. To summarize, you’ll need a substitute teaching license ($100 application fee; $50 registration fee), a physical exam (no older than 90 days), and a fingerprinting background check ($90). If you want to begin the verification process now, click on the ROE icon above to access their website.
