3 Overview Experienced workers transfer their skills to apprentices on-the-job Apprentices gain skills & knowledge in order to achieve journeyworker status Apprenticeship is a system of work-based learning that fulfills the needs of industry by preparing workers for skilled trades by combing on-the-job training with classroom instruction.

Comprehensive and structured on-the-job learning (OJL) Job Related Education (JRE)

5 On the Job Learning Outline of the skills and competencies to be learned on the job Hands on training in the work place Apprentice learns under the supervision & direction of a skilled mentor Minimum of 2,000 hours a year Safety is a requirement

6 Job Related Education Classroom instruction/related technical instruction Apprentice learns the theory behind what they do on the job Increases problem solving ability Minimum of 144 contact hours per 2,000 hours of OJL Safety is a requirement Career Readiness Certification

7 Nationally Recognized Credentials

Apprenticeship Committee would be a group of employers established by common core training area in which the program is operated as one program. NC Association of Electrical Contractors, NC Elevator Construotor Mechanis Employer Associations are associations that develop apprenticeship standards for their members who will have the same standards guidelines but operate their own program Statewide groups – Firefighters, Electric Membership Corporation, Electricities 7

Consultant works with employer to develop training program Apprentice is an employee who is mentored and monitored

9 Minimum Apprentice Requirements?
Minimum Age of 16 HS Graduate/Student or GED Employee of Sponsor Minimum 144 hrs of Job Related Education annually Not fully trained in occupation

10 How to Become an Apprentice?
Complete pre-apprentice training Explore work-based learning programs such as internship or cooperative education to confirm career choice Be an apprentice with your current employer Be an apprentice before or after completing either a 2 or 4 year degree

12 OJL Program Shorter term training program
1,000-4,000 hours of on-the-job learning Occupations that are not apprenticeable Job Related Education is optional Trainees receive a certificate of completion

13 Master Craftsman For Journeyworker level employees who want to enhance their education and training Sponsor must have an apprenticeship program Graduates of the program receive a master craftsman certificate, wallet card and patch

15 How eligible veterans can earn GI Bill benefits?
The N.C. Department of Labor Apprenticeship and Training Bureau is the State Approving Agency for eligible veterans An eligible veteran may receive GI Bill Benefits while working full time and earning wages This is what that means.
