1 Welcome to Room 23! November 18, 2016 Language Arts Word Study Writing
This week we started a new theme, “My Neighborhood.” We had many discussions on this theme and read a humorous fictional story, Shark in the Park. We learned a new comprehension strategy, sequencing, and practiced this with our Just Right Books at reading circle. We also learned three new vocabulary words, playground, park, and public. Our high frequency words (HFW) this week are: by, or, there, milk, more. Please review these with your child at home. Word Study This week we continued to practice with the short /u/ sound. Ask your child to sing the “Umbrella” song that we sing in class! We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /u/ sound. We learned and practiced the –ug and -un word families and students learned about other word families in their reading groups. We added new words to our word wall. Please practice these at home. They are: but, good Writing We continued organizing and finalized our “Best Part of Me” papers! We can’t wait for you to see them hanging in our classroom during conferences! Important Dates Nov : Early Dismissal & Parent-Teacher Conferences Nov : No School & Parent-Teacher Conferences Reminders November Scholastic Book orders due Monday, November 28! Holiday orders due by Friday, December 16. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! Weekly Reports Don’t forget to ask your child about his/her weekly report. Your child should be able to explain why he/she received an N in a specific category because we talk about it often. Please sign and return this to school on Monday!! Progress Reports Please look for your child’s progress report in his/her take-home folder. These went home today! If you have any questions, they can be discussed during your conference time. Science We have been continuing to learn about weather. This week we learned about clouds and the water cycle. Students had fun acting out evaporation, condensation, and precipitation in groups of 4! Ask your child to sing the song they learned about the water cycle! Math We continued Chapter 5: Shapes and Patterns. This week we learned all about solid shapes, made pictures and patterns with plane shapes, and explored the classroom to look for objects that resemble solid and plane shapes. We Are Thankful! This week we talked about things that we are all thankful for. Some examples are, friends, family, houses, food, and much more! We had a fun time making turkeys to hold our “thankful for” papers. We can’t wait for you to see them hanging in the halls during conferences!
