The Scarlet Letter Isabella Vinsonhaler
2
Hester Prynne This picture of a light bulb behind bars, represents Hester, because she was a confident and joyful girl, but was held back from showing those emotions. To me this picture shows pain, because she had to hide her expressions and emotions. Also throughout the whole book she had to stay collected, to show the people of the town and her daughter that she isn’t ashamed of herself.
3
Arthur Dimmesdale A picture of Jesus represents Arthur, because Arthur was a holy man in the book. In the beginning it sounded like he had followed God his whole life and stayed true loving God, but instead we learn he is atheist. I believe that he did actually believe in God, but over the years started questioning his beliefs.
4
Roger Chillingworth In this picture, Roger Chillingworth is expressed through mold and dirt combined, because he was an ugly, old man. He had also become a person whose one job was to avenge his wife, but this made him become a hollow man. Roger had become someone who wasn’t very important to the book anymore, because the “family” had figured out how to be happy.
5
Pearl Pearl was a very joyful child with a happy, but weird spirit. This jar of lights helps express who she is. Her happiness isn’t being contained but spreading, and one person who it spreads to is her mother Hester. Without Pearl I don’t think that Hester would have survived those years of shame.
6
Revenge A sunset is a beautiful thing, which the outcome of revenge in this book came to be. When Roger was trying to torture Arthur he was succeeding until Arthur had said to the whole town that he was the one who had committed adultery with Hester. His revenge actually sounded like it helped Arthur come out with the truth, since he could finally let the weight of his shoulders.
7
Pride This picture represents Hester’s “A” that she had walked around with. When Hester would walk around with her Scarlet Letter she would walk with pride and confidence. Even though she walked with it didn’t mean that she was feeling the same way inside. But just being able to wake up everyone morning and put on the letter is an achievement that many people wouldn’t do.
8
Sin An example of sin is lying and this flame represents this sin because whenever you lie you are just burning down the trust you have with the person. If you keep sinning this way, it will start to catch fire to all your other relationships and you will be left with no one to talk to. When Roger kept lying and torturing Arthur he was just digging himself a deeper hole which he was never able to get himself out of.
9
Isolation This picture of a pool of water with rocks expresses the idea of how far away Hester’s house was from the town, because in the Scarlet Letter the body’s of water was away from civilization and was either in the woods or on the beach. The one good thing about isolation though was that it was quiet and you wouldn’t have to worry about people. And lastly, since Hester’s house was close to the beach this picture represents her house.
10
Nature & Civilization This picture of dead sunflowers symbolizes nature and civilization, because it once was a happy community, but turned into a gloomy town when Hester Prynne started being judged. Even though the town wasn’t perfect before Hester had committed adultery, it had become more aware of the consequences for committing sin so everyone was a bit more quiet. Also whenever Hester and Pearl went out in the town people would talk about them behind their backs, which makes me love that Hester decided to live away from those people.
11
Person vs. Society This picture of a gloomy sky in winter expresses how Arthur felt having to contain his secret from the whole town. He had become filled with guilt and was punishing himself for not taking the stand with Hester, because he was worried of tarnishing his reputation. Arthur was put in a tough spot, since everyone loved him in his community, but he himself did not feel that way.
12
Mistress Hibbins This picture of a grand piano symbolises Mistress Hibbins, because she was an old lady who was very creepy. The ominous music that this piano plays also expresses her because Hibbins was a witch so you never know what might happen to you. She is still a mystery to the book, but after the talk with Hester about her it cleared some questions up and showed how Hibbins is kind of like.
13
Secrets This picture of a grandfather clock expresses the theme secrets because all of the secrets that were kept by Hester and Arthur were kept secret for seven years. It took time to get the truth out because once Arthur had been feeling too guilty he became a little crazy but then when telling the truth of how he feels to Hester, helped him have a bit of the weight off his shoulders. Also the time was really ticking before he died, because he had to tell everyone the truth before he could really be embraced by Hester.
