2 #14: “Apartheid”-A system of racial segregation that was enforced by South Africa’s racist government during the 1940s-1990s The South African government separated people into 4 racial groups: Whites Blacks (natives) Coloreds Asians The Apartheid

3 Discrimination What does discrimination mean?
The unfair treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or gender. #15: Ways that black Africans were discriminated against more than other groups: Made up over 80% of population, but only got 13% of land Not allowed to learn math or science Forced to live in certain homes on reserves without electricity Very restricted with jobs Given the worst land for farming Considered to be a foreigner in their own country Needed to carry passports at all times Were sent to prison much more frequently Discrimination

4 Coloreds #16: Multiracial- A person who represents more than one race
Ex: When a white person and a black person have a child, the child is multiracial #17: Coloreds (multiracial people) were treated BETTER than blacks and WORSE than whites They weren’t 100% white, so they were treated worse than whites They weren’t 100% black, so they were treated better than blacks Coloreds

5 African National Congress
#18: African National Congress (ANC): The leading anti-Apartheid group that fought for equal rights Led by Nelson Mandela Many ANC leaders were arrested and imprisoned African National Congress

6 #19: Nelson Mandela: The most influential anti-Apartheid leader who became the first black president of South Africa Imprisoned for 27 years for his role in the ANC Eventually released and elected first black president of South Africa Nelson Mandela
