3 King David Kalakaua Was king after Lunalilo in Feb 13, 1874.
Signed Reciprocity Treaty with US. He brought back Hawaiian Culture Hula Chant Music Wanted Hawaii to be independent

4 Bayonet Constitution Constitution - A body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state is acknowledged to be governed. forced on Kalakaua with bayonet It weaken the Hawaiian Monarchy even more. He no longer appoint the House of Nobles; now elected every 6 years. Veto’s can be overridden by Legislature. Legislature appoints King’s Cabinet. Foreigner have the right to vote

5 Queen Liliuokalani Ascended the throne after death of her brother Kalakaua. She tired to improve the Hawaiian people by making a new Constitution. Many business owners and other foreigners did not like that. They did something about it.

6 Road to Overthrow Overthrow – to take over a nation’s government
More and more Americans came to Hawaii for economic expansion. A lot of money was invested in Hawaii Jan 1893 – First Annexation Club was formed to counter the new Constitution. This became the Committee of Safety.

7 Overthrow Liliuokalani was about to reveal the new Pro Hawaiian constitution. US minister to Hawaii John Stevens asked USS Boston to send troops “to protect American life and Property 162 Armed sailors came ashore to Protect US Interest. The sailors went to palace instead of US homes or Businesses

8 Players of the Overthrow
Princess Kaiulani- went to US to talk to President Cleveland about overthrow. Lorrin Thurston – News Paper owner in Hawaii, that one of the people who supported Annexation; force Bayonet Constitution. Stanford B. Dole – first president of the Republic of Hawaii.

11 News of the Day Your making a news paper. (who, what, when why and how) Must have front page( with name and date with a main article with Overthrow of Hawaii. ( Each student must do an article) The 3 other articles have to do with overthrow Examples: President Cleveland/ McKinley views Views of the different players of the overthrow Committee of safety Great Mahele Must have letters to the editor about the overthrow 2 for each side A sports and weather section (this can make up) At least one ad during that time Illustrations for each article with caption (ie portrait of a person, Must be drawn)
