3 Nation of Immigrants On every coin are the words E Puribus Unum- out of many one. This latin phrase speaks to people from many nations have joined together to form one nation. More than 310 million people from many different countries are linked together to form one country.

4 European Settlers Until the mid 1900’s most immigrants came from Europe. The first Europeans to permanently settle in North America were Spaniards in the 1500’s. They occupied territory in FL, CA, TX, NM, NV, UT, OR & LA.

5 European Settlers Beginning in the 1600’s people from France, England & Holland came to North America The French settled in Canada, The English along the east coast The Dutch mainly in the NY area.

6 European Settlers Between 1860 & 1890 more than 10 million immigrants from Norway, Sweden & Denmark settle in the U.S.

7 European Settlers Between 1890 & 1924 about 22 million immigrants came to the U.S. from countries such as Italy, Greece, Poland & Russia.

8 European Settlers In todays world the largest share of immigration comes from Mexico, central America, China & India.

9 African Immigrants Among early immigrants, Western and Central Africans were taken by force from their homes & shipped across the Atlantic. They were sold into slavery in the Caribbean, South America & North America.

10 Changing Population Growth of the U.S. is not due entirely by immigration, but also because Americans are having children. Also people are living longer which also adds to the population as does the increase of age.

11 Unity Among Citizens An important source of American Unity is our common civic & political heritage based on our founding documents. Dec. of Ind Constitution Bill of Rights

12 Unity Among Citizens Popular Sovereignty is a value shared by Americans (government by the consent of the governed)

13 Unity Among Citizens Also shared is the concept of representative government in which these representatives elected are accountable to the electorate.

14 Unity Among Citizens Another common source is is a single language- English which is the accepted language for communication in business, government & education.

15 Unity Among Citizens We also display patriotism by flying the American flag, singing the National Anthem, reciting the pledge of allegiance, and following the laws of the land
