1 What Jesus Taught About Marriage And Divorce
11/20/2018 What Jesus Taught About Marriage And Divorce 5-07

2 I. Jesus and the Old Testament
5-07

3 Mt. 19:3-9 [3] The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? [4] And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5-07

4 [5] And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? [6] Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 5-07

5 [8] He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 5-07

6 [9] And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 5-07

7 Gen. 2:21-24 [21] And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; [22] And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 5-07

8 [23] And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 5-07

9 Jesus endorses the story of creation
Jesus endorses monogamy - one woman for one man and the two become one flesh Jesus did not authorize polygamy 5-07

10 Under the Law of Moses Dt. 24:1-4
[1] When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. 5-07

11 [2] And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
[3] And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; 5-07

12 [4] Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. 5-07

13 With passing of the Old Law this concession ended
Col. 2:14 [14] Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross 5-07

14 Jesus was more strict than Moses
Mt. 19:10 [10] His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. 5-07

15 II. Divorce and Remarriage
5-07

16 Further contrast of Jesus and Moses - Mt. 5:31-32
[31] It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: [32] But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. 5-07

17 Mt. 19:9 [9] And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 5-07

18 Exception versus the general rule
5-07

19 The general rule stated Mk. 10:11-12
[11] And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. [12] And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery 5-07

20 The general rule stated Lk. 16:18
[18] Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. 5-07

21 The one exception Mt. 19:9 [9] And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 5-07

22 Prov. 13:15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.. 5-07
