2 Assessing Accessing Accepting the Issue

3 This is not a “church of Christ” issue
The church of Christ does not have positions Christ has positions II John 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. The New Testament has positions (I Peter 4:11)

4 This is not an outdated issue
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day

5 What is God’s view of marriage?
Genesis 2: And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed (Matthew 19:4-5; Ephesians 5:31)

6 What is God’s view of divorce?
Malachi 2:13-15—Divorce brings sorrow Malachi 2:16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously Matthew 19:6 …What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder

7 What is God’s view of remarriage?
Two exceptions: Death (Romans 7:1-3) Fornication Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (5:32)

8 “But what about…” Abuse?
I Corinthians 7: And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife

9 Obedience to the Gospel?
Matthew 19:9 …Whosever… John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

10 Repenting? I Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither…adulterers… (Galatians 5:19) Matthew 19:9 …committeth adultery… Matthew 21: …he repented, and went

11 My happiness? Consider happiness vs. the state of the home Consider the path that leads to divorce John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid

12 “What do I do now?” Ezra 9:2—Israel had sinned regarding marriage
Ezra 10:3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law (verses 16-17, 44) Matthew 14:4; II Corinthians 2:5-8, cf. I Cor. 5

13 Philippians 2:5-9 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name
