Mark 10:1-12 “Marriage, Divorce, Remarriage”

2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

“What did Moses command?”

“Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

Deuteronomy 24: 1-4 1 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies,

Deuteronomy 24: 1-4 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

On the _____ day of the week ______ in the month _______ in the year ______ from the beginning of the world, according to the common computation in the province of Northampton County, I John son of Mark by whatever name I may be known, of the town of Bethlehem with entire consent of mind, and without any constraint, have divorced, dismissed and expelled thee Sarah daughter of Elizabeth by whatever name thou art called,

of the town of Nazareth so as to be free at they own disposal, to marry whomsoever thou pleases, without hindrance from anyone from this day for ever. Thou art therefore free for anyone who would marry thee. Let this be thy bill of divorce from me, a writing of separation and expulsion, according to the law of Moses and Israel. ________, son of ________ witness

Points to Consider 1.Divorce was permitted, but not commanded. 2.Think twice about carrying through with it. 3.Divorce was not God’s intention for marriage but because of the fall of man, he gave regulations for it. It’s because of sin.

“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law.”

Mark 6-9 What God Intended 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

Matthew 19:10 “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”

Mark 9:11-12 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians 7:12 12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

Mark 10:13-16 Jesus loves Children

1.God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman for life. 2.Divorce was instituted as a result of sin. 3.A divorce itself is not necessarily sinful if it involves adultery. 4.The Bible Fellowship Church will only allow remarriage in the case of adultery or the death of a spouse, not abandonment.

5. Divorce is not the unpardonable sin. 6. If you haven’t divorced on biblical grounds, repent to God and he will forgive you and do all you can to meet biblical expectations.
