3 What is Statistics Explained? – a quick reminder
Eurostat's electronic publication system with over 800 articles in English – around 90 translated into French and German and 20 into nearly all EU languages. Articles dealing with statistics on an EU level from a wide range of statistical domains A high visibility: visits and 4.3 million page views on average per month in the last year

4 What is the project of opening Statistics Explained about?
Decided at the last DWG in November 2014 to open Statistics Explained to include articles from NSIs and to create a Task Force. Aim: to better reply to users' needs by complementing Eurostat articles containing information on the EU with more detailed information on a national level. And vice versa!

5 Task Force 8 NSIs participated: Estonia, Spain, Croatia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden Meeting held in Luxembourg in May 2015

6 Conclusions of the Task Force
Topic chosen: Marriages and births in the EU Common part: Marital situation of the EU population Number of marriages, crude marriage rate and age at first marriage Number of divorces and crude divorce rate Consensual unions Number of live births, fertility rate, births outside marriage and age of women at first child birth Specific part: Specific national analysis including complementary indicators available at national level (for example same sex marriages, mixed marriages, regional data etc.)

7 Conclusions of the Task Force
Length of articles: 4-5 pages including text, tables and graphs. Text easy to read. Signed articles: Recommended. Validation: All national articles should be validated by the respective hierarchy of the NSI before being sent to Eurostat. Translation: All articles to be translated from the national language into English by the NSI.

8 Conclusions of the Task Force Time table
Eurostat sent out tables with data for the common indicators in June 2015. The participants of the Task Force sent their articles (national and English version) to Eurostat by mid July 2015. All nine articles were published on 14 September 2015 in Statistics Explained accompanied by tweets

9 What was Eurostat's role in the publication process?
All eight articles were sent to Eurostat from the NSIs in Word and Excel format Eurostat inserted them in Statistics Explained Eurostat also checked the common figures for consistency Review of the text for harmonising the presentation and check the English A common introduction and a logo were added

10 Different Member States – different styles
Articles are very different but still very good Differences in writing styles Differences in the layout of graphs and tables Some divided into common and specific and some not Most articles signed, but some not Most only graphs, some tables and even infographics

13 What are the next steps? It would be desirable to have a complete ESS publication of the topic by the end of the year. Would you like to participate? If so, could you send your articles by mid-November?
