1 Working Group on Population and Housing Censuses
Luxembourg, September 2014 Item 3 of the Agenda Updated information on dissemination

2 Summary Update status of the Census Hub IT project
Progress report on other planned dissemination routes for 2011 census data Census data on Eurostat's online database Statistical dashboards Interactive thematic maps Other dissemination routes

3 The Census Hub First example of full implementation of SDMX in the ESS
Distributed data warehouse based on the concept of "data sharing" SDMX "nodes" in NSIs central application statistical user

4 The Census Hub Most of the software that constitutes the Census Hub is a "generic solution" input parameters are the DSD of the relevant datasets A solution that can easily be applied to other statistical domains The "SDMX Reference Infrastructure": the link between the different nodes of the system Whole new concept of "data transmission": data are pulled dynamically upon user request

15 The Census Hub During the past months Eurostat has been developing, testing, improving both the central application and the connections to the end-nodes All eventual IT problems were solved during this time The system now performs well in tests that simulate "real life" use

16 The Census Hub The "back-office" part of the Census Hub keeps a detailed log of all user queries, which is stored in a dedicated database This log allows Eurostat to derive useful indications about the relevance of each census variable Indications about relevance will be an input for the foreseen revision of EU census legislation for 2021 Over 6,000 queries were executed in the timespan 1 Aug – 15 Sept by users outside the European Commission

19 Census data on Eurostat online DB
A set of 19 tables on the 2011 census will be published on Eurostat's online database These tables have a significantly lower level of dimensionality with respect to the Census Hub hypercubes Additional levels of validation will be put in place for these tables using the EDIT software Checking the validity of additivity constraints for each total/subtotal in each dimension

20 Census data on Eurostat online DB
Data source for these 19 tables will be the Census Hub Eurostat designed a quasi-automatic procedure to update these tables (manual intervention required for EDIT validation) As foreseen by the legislation, in case of planned revisions to the Census Hub data Eurostat should be informed in advance

21 Statistical dashboards
Eurostat is using a proprietary software tool (NComVA) to develop statistical dashboards on the 2011 census Dashboards are increasingly popular tools to display statistical data Despite its limitations, the NComVA fits well the high level of geographical detail of census data

22 Bubble charts

23 Bar charts

24 Dot charts

25 Possible customizations

26 Interactive thematic maps
Intuitive and captivating way to display statistical data Ongoing work on census maps based on the "Statistical Atlas" of Eurostat Regional Yearbook Several changes/improvements w.r.t. the "Statistical Atlas": Geographic detail of the map depends on zoom level Enhancements to the background map Better labelling of regions/cities

32 Improving map's readability (1): Labelling each NUTS region

33 Improving map's readability (2): Labelling major cities

34 Other dissemination routes
Dedicated section on population and housing censuses on the Eurostat website News releases Articles on Eurostat's Wiki ("Statistics Explained") Dedicated publication on population and census foreseen for 2015

35 Making census data visible to the public at large
First step : conclusion of the quality assessment exercise Out of the dissemination routes presented here, some will be considered critical for the "opening" of the Census Hub The time needed to complete these critical routes will define the timetable for the "opening"

36 Making census data visible to the public at large
Other dissemination routes will be made available at a later stage, after the Census Hub is announced to the general public As soon as relevant decisions are taken, Eurostat will inform all stakeholders about the timetable and about which dissemination routes will be considered critical

37 Thanks for your attention!
