3 The Supreme Court Is the most powerful Court system in the Judicial Branch Duty: They hear cases dealing with upholding the U.S. Constitution

4 Original Jurisdiction
The Supreme Court has Original Jurisdiction in 2 cases: Disputes from foreign countries Disputes between states.

7 Who selects the Justices???
The president appoints Supreme Court Justices, with the approval of the Senate The Senate typically gives the president advise in appointing a new justice

8 Judicial Review The Court can review any federal, state, or local law or action to see if it is constitutional Established Judicial Review Court Case Marbury –vs- Madison

9 John Marshal Established:
The Constitution is the supreme law of the land If there is a conflict between the Constitution and any other law, the Constitution wins The Judicial Branch has a duty to uphold the Constitution

10 Checks on Power Presidential Checks: Congressional Checks:
Nominates the Judges to the Position Congressional Checks: Congress can get around a Court ruling by passing a new law or change an existing one

11 Caseload The Supreme Court handles: Example:
The number of cases handled in a given period. The Supreme Court handles: Thousands of Cases each year Example: In 2004 the Supreme Court saw about 7,500 cases
