1 A Peek at What We Are Learning This Week At Mandeville Elementary
2nd Grade News Week of August 27, 2018 Ms. Mauer (985) A Peek at What We Are Learning This Week Reading & Writing- “Trouble at the Sandbox” & “Snowshoe Hare’s Winter Home” are our texts for the first lesson. Students will focus on character, setting, character’s point of view, and sequencing throughout the lessons this week. Their writing is in response to the literature. They create new settings, events and characters in response to the story. Language, Phonics & Spelling- The students will work with short vowel sound “CVC” words in their phonics and spelling lessons. They will work on identifying nouns in sentences and stories as well as properly using nouns in their writing. Math- The students will continue using different strategies and concrete models to make 10. They will also solve addition and subtraction word problems within 100 using the Read, Draw, Write problem solving method. Making a 10 to make an easier math problem is a strategy many use in mental math but we are encouraging the students to show and explain this thinking to help them as the problems become more challenging. Social Studies- The students will continue learning about their community and the way rules and laws work in the community. They will also learn about the roles of a good citizen. What’s Happening At Mandeville Elementary August 31 – Wisdom Awards at Morning Meeting September 3 – Labor Day Holiday September 4 – ELA Awards at Morning Meeting September 10 – 14 Grandparents Week 2nd Grade will be on Sept. 13 September 18 – Open House 6-7:30PM The second graders are excited about all they have been learning. This year the tests and grades may look a little different than you are used to. For example, spelling will no longer consist of a list of words for the students to study and learn. We are focusing more on the application of skills. The students will work on foundational skills and be tested on the application of the skill at the end of the unit. Homework We encourage students to read nightly for 15 minutes and work on math to help retain problem solving strategies and build fluency. Additional homework may be given at my discretion.
