2 The Author Anton Checkov: ( ) A Russian author who lived between 1860 and Best known for his short stories and plays, Anton Chekhov also worked as a physician. His job as a doctor did not pay very well, so Chekhov did a lot of different things for money, including writing.

3 The Characters Stepan Tschubukov: A country farmer
Natalia Stepanova: Tschubukov’s daughter Ivan Lomov: Tschubukov’s neighbor

4 The Setting Location: In the reception room in Tshcubukov’s country home in Russia. Time: The Present [1890s]

5 The Plot Ivan Vassiliyitch Lomov, a long-time neighbor of Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov, has come to propose marriage to Chubukov's 25-year-old daughter, Natalia. After he has asked and received joyful permission to marry Natalia, she is invited into the room, and he tries to convey to her the proposal.

6 After her father notices they are arguing, he joins in, and then sends Ivan out of the house. While Stepan rants about Lomov, he expresses his shock that "this fool dares to make you (Natalia) a proposal of marriage!" She immediately starts into hysterics, begging for her father to bring him back. He does, and Natalia and Ivan get into a second big argument, this time about the superiority of their respective hunting dogs, Guess and Squeezer.

7 Ivan collapses from his exhaustion over arguing, and father and daughter fear he's dead. However, after a few minutes he regains consciousness, and Chubukov all but forces him and his daughter to accept the proposal with a kiss. Immediately following the kiss, the couple gets into another argument.

8 Rising Action When Natalia faces Lomov, and Lomov struggles to tell her what is his purpose and he want to express it briefly. They end up arguing about their property and Lomov forget about his purpose. Chubukov enters and then tell him, upon the request of Natalia, that they owned the oxen meadows which cause the problem to rise. They drive away Lomov and called him with different names.

9 The climax Tschubukov brings Lomov back after he left, but the timid Lomov still cannot bring himself to propose. When he again faints, the Tshubukovs repeat their hysteria, finally as Lomov begins to regain consciousness, the father intevenes, determined not to miss a second oportunity: “Tschubukov! She’s willing! Well, kiss each other and the devil take you both!”

10 The Resolution Natalia, seeing Lomovfaint,thinks that his dead and starts crying Chubukov help lomov to gain consciousness. As Lomov gain his consciousness Chubukov is desperate and wanted the argument to stop so he told Lomov that Natalia accepts his proposal.

11 The Conflict Man vs. Man: Lomovs’ principle against Natalia.
Man vs. Society: The idea that lomov wants to marry Natalia not because of love but for economic stability.

12 The Theme Principles complicates minor issues.
Marriage is a necessity. The play may suggest that love sometimes is not important in marriage, it is sometimes a way to stabilize financial status.

13 Tone Mood Humourous Funny
The characters’ attitude in the play is comical which entertains the readers.
